Mount Elgon is a prime trekking mountain in Kenya and Uganda. This is a huge volcano bragging to have the largest crater of the other taller East African peaks.
The mountain got her name from the Maasai words- Ol Doinyo Illgoon. This means “The Breast Mountain”.
It has one of the biggest calderas in the world!
The mountain has 5 peaks namely:
(a) Wagagai (4321m)
(b) Sudek (4,302m)
(c) Koitobos 4,222m)
(d) Mubiyi (4,211m)
(e) Masaba (4,161m)
NAIROBI – KITALE
DAY 1: We depart Nairobi at 8:00am and drive via Nakuru to Eldoret town for lunch. After lunch, drive to Kitale town for dinner and over night at Aturukan Hotel base hotel for readiness of the following morning trekking in Mount Elgon
KITALE – RONGAI CAMP
DAY 2: After breakfast, we drive for 1hr to Rongai gate of Mount Elgon National park. After signing in, drive to the Rongai camp for an early lunch. After pitching the tents, drive to Kitum caves. These are stunning caves and with luck you might see the elusive Genet cat. You can see the salt-loving elephants near Kitum cave. The water fall at the entrance of Mackingeny is spectacular and the colonies of large fruit bats and small horseshoe bats makes it more interesting. Return to the camp for dinner and overnight stay.
RONGAI CAMP – KOITOBOSS – KITALE
DAY 3: After breakfast, we drive to the road head. Hike for 4hrs to Koitoboss summit. The trail passes in the scattered moorland with huge lobelia and groundsel. We return to the car park and drive back to Kitale base hotel for a much awaited hot shower. We take our dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.
KITALE – NAROBI
DAY 4: After breakfast, we drive to Nakuru town for lunch. After Lunch, we drive back to Nairobi having achieved our goal of trekking in Mount Elgon.
