Grading: Difficult Steep Terrain
Trekking Time: 7 – 8 hours
Altitude: 3794 AMSL
Hike Summary
The Northern moorlands of the Aberdares have long been accessed from the Shamata gate in Nyandarua. We however bring you this exciting trail with easy access just off the corridor between Mt. Kipipiri and the Aberdares ridge. The trail starts off on a steep ascent with a bit of tree cover. The destruction caused by the surrounding communities is evident here.
The upper reaches lead on to beautiful craggy rock ridges before giving way to moorland famous for its bog or tussock grass. The ridge becomes gradual in the moorland before leading up the last climb to Table Mountain on the upper reaches.
Itinerary Summary
Meet with our expedition crew for an early morning departure.
Drive for three and a half hours Kwa Matu Centre for the start.
After a stretch & safety briefing, start the climb. The climb is a pleasant but challenging walk up the long steep ridge. From the summit, the vast Aberdares moorland with the distant Castle, Mount Satima, and Rurimueria are visible on clear days. Mount Kipipiri also rises across the Wanjohi valley to the west.
After a picnic at the summit, the descent is via the same route.
